Victor Wembanyama was born on January 4, 2004, in Le Chesnay, France. As of November 2026, he is 22 years old. Standing at 7 feet 4 inches, the French phenom entered the global basketball consciousness long before hearing his name called on draft night. Known widely as "Wemby", his journey from the Parisian suburbs to superstardom in the San Antonio Spurs organization represents one of the most documented ascents in modern sports history.
Understanding his complete trajectory requires looking past basic trivia. His upbringing in an athletic family, early European professional milestones, and rapid adaptation to the National Basketball Association (NBA) outline a player redefining the boundaries of basketball.
Early Life and Athletic Background
Growing up in Le Chesnay, a commune near Versailles, Wembanyama was immersed in sports from day one. His father, Félix Wembanyama, competed in track and field events including the high jump and long jump, while his mother, Élodie de Fautereau, played basketball professionally and later transitioned into coaching.
Long before focusing exclusively on basketball, Wembanyama dabbled in soccer as a goalkeeper and practiced judo. However, his mother began teaching him basketball fundamentals when he was five years old. By age seven, he joined the local club Entente Le Chesnay Versailles. His uncommon physical proportions quickly attracted scouts. At ten years old, he entered the youth academy of Nanterre 92, a prominent development hub in French basketball.
