Victor Wembanyama was born on January 4, 2004, in Le Chesnay, France. As of 2026, he is 22 years old. Standing at 7 feet 4 inches, the French phenom commonly known as Wemby entered professional basketball long before most players finish high school, quickly transforming from a local youth prospect into a generational talent in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Understanding his background requires looking past his staggering height to examine the family athletic foundation, early club development, and record-breaking professional debut in Europe that set the stage for his arrival with the San Antonio Spurs.
Family Athletic Background and Upbringing
Wembanyama grew up in a household deeply immersed in sports. His mother, Élodie de Fautereau, played basketball competitively and later transitioned into a youth basketball coach, teaching him the fundamental mechanics of the game when he was just five years old. His father, Félix Wembanyama, competed in track and field events, specializing in the high jump, long jump, and triple jump.
This athletic lineage shaped his physical coordination. Despite growing taller than almost everyone in his peer group, Wembanyama maintained the lateral agility and fluid movement typically expected of guards rather than traditional centers. His siblings also pursued sports seriously; his older sister Ève plays professional basketball, while his younger brother Oscar has competed in youth basketball and handball.
Before dedicating himself fully to basketball, young Wembanyama experimented with association football—playing primarily as a goalkeeper—and practiced judo. These diverse disciplines helped build the body control and spatial awareness that define his unique playing style today.
Early Club Career and European Rise
At age seven, Wembanyama joined his local club, Entente Le Chesnay Versailles. His immense frame and natural instincts caught the eye of youth scouts across the region. By age ten, he entered the youth academy of Nanterre 92, a French professional club recognized for its elite talent development.
- FC Barcelona Loan: In 2018, Wembanyama played for FC Barcelona’s youth squad during the Minicopa del Rey tournament in Spain, helping them secure a third-place finish. Barcelona offered him a permanent youth contract, but he declined, preferring to develop within the French basketball infrastructure.
- Professional Debut: On October 29, 2019, Wembanyama made his senior professional debut for Nanterre 92 in a EuroCup match against Brescia. At 15 years and nine months old, he became the second-youngest player ever to feature in the competition.
- Dominance in Pro A: He later played for ASVEL and Metropolitans 92, winning the LNB Pro A Best Young Player award multiple times and capturing league MVP honors before declaring for the NBA draft.
Transition to the Global Stage
Wembanyama's international career progressed in parallel with his club success. He represented France at the FIBA U16 European Championship and the FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup, winning silver medals at both tournaments. His performance against elite global competition confirmed that his skillset translated seamlessly against players several years older.
Selected first overall by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2023 NBA Draft, Wembanyama wasted no time asserting his dominance in North America. He captured the NBA Rookie of the Year award for the 2023-24 season and secured subsequent selections to All-Defensive and All-NBA teams. He also led the French national team to a silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
