The Chinese fantasy television series The Longest Promise brings a complex world of imperial politics, divine rites, and mystical martial arts to life. Adapted from Cang Yue's acclaimed fantasy novel Mirror: Zhu Yan, the series centers on the turbulent relationship between a secluded royal priest and a spirited tribal princess whose fates intertwine across devastating political trials.
At the heart of the series' appeal is a prominent ensemble cast blending high-profile C-pop star power with seasoned supporting actors. Understanding who plays whom helps viewers navigate the intricate tribal factions, royal bloodlines, and magical hierarchies governing the fictional realm of Yunhuang.
Main Cast and Lead Characters
The primary narrative drives forward through two central figures whose master-and-disciple bond shifts into a sweeping romance burdened by prophecy and duty.
- Xiao Zhan as Shi Ying: As the cold, solitary, and exceptionally powerful imperial prince of Kongsang, Shi Ying serves as the Young Master of Jiuyi Mountain. Xiao Zhan brings immense star power to the role, portraying a character gifted in mystical arts who hides deep emotional scars. Forced into exile and religious devotion after surviving palace conspiracies, Shi Ying's life alters completely when he crosses paths with Zhu Yan.
- Ren Min as Zhu Yan: Portrayed with a bright, relentless energy, Zhu Yan is the Princess of the Chi Tribe within the Kongsang Empire. Unlike the rigid decorum of the capital, she acts with fierce loyalty and a warm disposition. Her dynamic with Shi Ying shifts from respectful mentorship to fierce opposition and, ultimately, profound devotion as they face empire-wide threats.
Supporting Cast and Key Factions
The political landscape of Yunhuang relies heavily on powerful clans, loyal retainers, and spiritual mentors who shape the protagonists' journeys.
- Alen Fang (Fang Yilun) as Shi Yu: A prominent member of the royal ecosystem whose journey intertwines with the complex alliances of the realm. Fang brings depth to the supporting hierarchy, balancing court expectations with personal loyalties.
- Wang Churan as Bai Xuelu: As the ambitious eldest illegitimate daughter of the Bai tribe, Bai Xuelu navigates strict social hierarchies with calculated cunning. Her desire to secure status for her mother drives her actions until external disasters force her to reevaluate her priorities.
- Wang Ziqi as Qing Gang: A formidable and honorable warrior belonging to the Qing tribe. Qing Gang provides a steady, reliable presence amidst shifting political loyalties, acting with a strong sense of duty.
- Li Mingde as Chong Ming: Serving as Shi Ying's loyal companion, Chong Ming has stayed by the master's side for years. Having been saved by Shi Ying in the past, he knows his master's temperament inside out and treats protection as an absolute calling.
- Ye Shengjia as Shi Yu and Lu Yuxiao as Bai Xueying: This pairing highlights the romantic subplots of the series. Bai Xueying is the gentle, legitimate daughter of the Bai tribe, while Shi Yu's affections for her face intense political friction from tribal pressures.
Behind the Star Power
The series drew massive viewership numbers upon its release largely due to the casting of Xiao Zhan, whose global fan base frequently drives high engagement for historical fantasy dramas. Paired with Ren Min, the production balanced youthful star power with veteran character actors like Han Dong (playing Da Si Ming) and Mickey He (playing the Emperor of Bei Mian). This generational mix anchors the fantasy elements in grounded, dramatic performances.
