Neither Drew nor Jonathan Scott has passed away. Both stars of HGTV's popular franchise are alive, healthy, and continuing their television and production careers. If you saw a shocking headline or a viral video claiming otherwise, you fell victim to a fabricated celebrity death hoax designed purely to generate clicks and ad revenue.
Internet rumors periodically target famous television personalities with fake accident reports or health crises. Understanding how these false stories start helps you separate sensationalized clickbait from verified facts.
Where the Property Brothers Death Rumors Started
Social media platforms routinely host automated or low-effort channels that manufacture fake celebrity news. A prominent hoax regarding Drew Scott circulated heavily across YouTube and TikTok, featuring fabricated reports of a fatal car accident or a sudden family tragedy.
These videos often use recycled footage, AI-generated voiceovers, or misleading thumbnails to trick casual scrollers. Viewers who look closely at these clips often spot platform disclaimers noting that the audio or visuals were digitally altered or synthetically generated. Credible news networks, major wire services, and official family statements have never confirmed any such incident because the event never happened. Additional reporting by Bloomberg explores comparable views on the subject.
Current Status of Drew and Jonathan Scott
Both brothers remain active in the entertainment industry and maintain a heavy presence on social media.
- Drew Scott: Continues to produce television content, manage home design projects, and raise his family with his wife, Linda Phan. He regularly shares updates, behind-the-scenes clips, and family moments on his verified social channels.
- Jonathan Scott: Active in ongoing production ventures, environmental advocacy, and home renovation projects alongside his partner, Zooey Deschanel.
The brothers recently marked two decades of television presence through various production deals and active show formats, keeping them firmly in the public eye.
The Third Scott Brother: Clarifying J.D. Scott's Health
Sometimes rumors about the Property Brothers stem from confusion surrounding their older brother, J.D. Scott. J.D. is an original part of the family's entertainment ventures and has faced significant health challenges in the past.
A few years ago, J.D. Scott suffered from a severe, mysterious illness that caused extreme fatigue, acute sensitivity to daily stimuli, and dangerous inflammation. Doctors struggled for months to diagnose the underlying autoimmune issue. While the ordeal was terrifying for the Scott family, J.D. fought through the illness, received proper medical treatment, and recovered. He remains alive today, though he maintains a slightly more private lifestyle compared to his twin brothers. Confusing J.D.'s past health battles with current events often fuels inaccurate online chatter.
Why Fake Celebrity Death Hoaxes Spread
Clickbait creators exploit human psychology. Emotional headlines like "shocking update" or "tragedy strikes" trigger immediate curiosity and concern. Unsuspecting fans share these videos, which boosts algorithmic visibility for the spam channels responsible.
Platforms like Meta and YouTube have implemented stricter policies against synthetic misinformation, but automated uploads still slip through regularly.
How to Verify Celebrity Death Claims Quickly
When you encounter an alarming claim about a public figure, a few quick checks will reveal the truth:
- Check Major News Outlets: Outlets like BBC News or major entertainment trades (such as Variety or The Hollywood Reporter) report immediately on the passing of major television stars. If major outlets are silent, the story is false.
- Examine Official Social Media: Visit the verified Instagram or X accounts of the celebrity or their immediate family members. Active posting completely refutes claims of sudden tragedy.
- Inspect the Source: Look past sensationalized titles to see if the video comes from an unverified, generic aggregator channel with no journalistic history.
