Patrick Mahomes has won 3 Super Bowl rings throughout his career with the Kansas City Chiefs. As the defining quarterback of his era, he has reached the championship game multiple times, establishing a legacy that places him among the greatest players in NFL history.
Securing three titles before turning thirty puts Mahomes on a short list of legendary signal-callers. Understanding his championship resume requires looking at each title run, the games he lost, and how his career trajectory compares to historical benchmarks.
The Three Championship Seasons
Mahomes earned his three Super Bowl rings across a dominant five-year span, leading the Chiefs through high-stakes postseason battles.
Super Bowl LIV (2019 Season)
Played on February 2, 2020, this game marked Mahomes' first championship victory. The Chiefs faced a 20-10 deficit against the San Francisco 49ers in the fourth quarter. Mahomes orchestrated a furious comeback, throwing two touchdown passes in the final frame to secure a 31-20 win. He earned the Super Bowl MVP award, becoming one of the youngest quarterbacks to ever win a title.
Super Bowl LVII (2022 Season)
After falling short in previous playoff appearances, Mahomes returned to the championship stage to face the Philadelphia Eagles on February 12, 2023. Playing through a high ankle sprain, he completed key passes in the second half to set up a game-winning field goal, winning 38-35. Mahomes captured his second Super Bowl MVP after throwing for 182 yards and three touchdowns while adding 44 rushing yards.
Super Bowl LVIII (2023 Season)
In a rematch of Super Bowl LIV, the Chiefs met the San Francisco 49ers on February 11, 2024. In a tense defensive struggle that went into overtime, Mahomes led a clutch 75-yard drive ending in a game-winning touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman. The 25-22 victory made the Chiefs the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls since the New England Patriots in the early 2000s, and earned Mahomes his third Super Bowl MVP.
Super Bowl Losses and Appearance Record
A complete picture of Mahomes' championship career includes his appearances in the games where he did not take home the ring.
- Super Bowl LV (2020 Season): The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Chiefs 31-9. Playing behind a heavily depleted offensive line due to injuries, Mahomes ran for his life all night and failed to score an offensive touchdown for the first time in his career.
- Super Bowl LIX (2024 Season): The Chiefs advanced to their third straight title game seeking a historic three-peat, but ultimately fell short in a hard-fought contest.
These defeats highlight how difficult it is to sustain perfection in the modern NFL, even for elite rosters.
Tracking the Chase: Mahomes vs. Historical Greats
Fans and analysts constantly debate where Mahomes stands relative to other iconic quarterbacks. Tom Brady holds the record with seven Super Bowl rings, a milestone that serves as the ultimate benchmark.
Mahomes secured his first three titles at a faster pace than Brady did to start his career. While catching seven rings requires immense longevity and sustained health, Mahomes' early-career accumulation puts him ahead of the historical pace set by legends like Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw, who both finished their careers with four rings.
