Odell Beckham Jr. doesn't have a brother playing in the National Football League. While sports fans frequently search for family ties given his prominent last name and athletic lineage, the star wide receiver is the only sibling in his immediate family to reach the professional football ranks. His famous younger brother, Kordell Beckham, chose a different path in entertainment and modeling, famously winning over reality TV audiences on Love Island USA rather than catching passes on Sunday afternoons.
Understanding the actual makeup of the Beckham family clears up common mix-ups regarding league rosters. Athletic bloodlines run deep through the family tree, but Odell remains the lone representative who carried the family name onto NFL grids.
The Truth About Odell Beckham Jr. and League Relatives
Odell Beckham Jr. built his reputation as an elite playmaker through stints with the New York Giants, Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens, and Miami Dolphins. Because of his high profile, casual observers often wonder if other players sharing his surname—or his striking athletic builds—are siblings carving out their own professional careers.
To clear up any confusion:
- No NFL Brothers: Odell has zero brothers playing professional football.
- The Kordell Confusion: His younger brother Kordell gained massive public attention, but he pursues a career in fashion and media rather than sports.
- Father's Footsteps: His father, Odell Beckham Sr., played running back at Louisiana State University in the early 1990s, but never played in the NFL.
Athletic Background in the Beckham Family
Even though an NFL brother doesn't exist, athletic excellence surrounds the family. Genetics played a massive role in Odell's physical gifts on the gridiron.
His mother, Heather Van Norman, was a legendary track and field star. She dominated competition as a multi-time NCAA champion sprinter at LSU, bringing world-class speed and acceleration genetics into the family. His step-father, Derek Mills, is an Olympic gold medalist who won gold in the 400-meter relay at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.
This heavy track background explains where Odell gets his trademark breakaway speed and shiftiness in the open field. While his relatives excelled on the track and in collegiate backfields, Odell translated those traits into a prolific career as an NFL pass-catcher.
How Kordell Beckham Rose to Fame
Kordell Beckham stepped into the national spotlight independently of his older brother's football career. Rather than putting on shoulder pads, Kordell built a following in the fashion industry as a model and lifestyle personality.
His breakout moment arrived when he starred in season six of Love Island USA, where his laid-back personality and style won over viewers. Despite operating in completely different industries, the brothers maintain a tight bond. Odell regularly offers advice on handling intense public scrutiny, drawing from his own decade-plus experience dealing with relentless media attention in professional sports.
Common Mistakes Fans Make Regarding NFL Relatives
When tracking players, fans often fall into traps based on shared last names or college programs.
- Assuming Shared Careers: Sharing an alma mater or last name frequently leads to false assumptions about sibling relationships in professional sports.
- Confusing Generation Lines: People frequently mix up Odell Beckham Sr.'s collegiate career with an active professional tenure, assuming the father played professionally when his career ended in college.
- Misinterpreting Social Media Support: When professional athletes post proud messages about family members winning reality TV shows or launching clothing lines, casual fans sometimes mistake those ventures for athletic transitions.
