Finding valid local savings as a service member stationed on the island can take real effort. Oahu Veterans Day deals span island-wide dining promotions, local attraction discounts, and retail offers that give back to active-duty personnel, reservists, and veterans.
Navigating these promotions requires knowing where to look beyond standard mainland chain ads. Many local Oahu businesses and military installations roll out exclusive perks every November to honor those who serve.
Dining Specials and Restaurant Freebies on Oahu
National chains with island locations traditionally offer complimentary meals on November 11, but local Oahu spots often provide unique variations. You'll need to bring a valid military ID, retired military card, or proof of service like a DD-214 form for almost all dining deals.
- Chains with Local Branches: Major restaurants across Oahu—such as Applebee's, Chili's, and Outback Steakhouse—participate in nationwide Veterans Day menus, offering free entrées or fixed-percentage discounts for dine-in customers.
- Local Coffee and Bakery Spots: Island spots like Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii frequently run buy-one-get-one specials or complimentary drink offers for service members.
- Waikiki and Resort Dining: Many resort properties along the coast offer special military appreciation pricing during November, sometimes extending discounts to family members dining with the service member.
Always call ahead to confirm participation, as franchise locations on military bases or smaller shopping centers occasionally operate under different promotional schedules than mainland counterparts.
Oahu Attraction and Recreation Discounts
Military families on Oahu have access to deep discounts on local entertainment and historical sites. You don't have to wait for November 11 to enjoy many of these perks, but Veterans Day week brings heightened awareness and additional promotions.
- Pearl Harbor National Memorial: Active-duty military, veterans, and eligible family members get free admission to key historic sites with proper identification.
- Honolulu Zoo and Waikiki Aquarium: Both local favorites offer substantial price breaks on admission for military ID holders and their dependents.
- MWR Leisure Travel Services: The U.S. Army MWR Hawaiʻi Leisure Travel office at Schofield Barracks offers discounted tickets for luaus, catamaran sails, and interisland activities that beat retail gate prices.
Retail and Shopping Savings
November brings broad retail promotions across Oahu shopping centers, from Ala Moana Center to local commissaries.
- Exchange and Commissary Deals: The Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) hosts major sales events throughout November, featuring zero sales tax and deep discounts on electronics, apparel, and outdoor gear.
- Off-Base National Retailers: Big-box stores and clothing brands with Oahu storefronts offer military appreciation discounts ranging from 10% to 20% off when you present your ID at checkout.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Service members often miss out on local savings because of simple oversights. Keep these pitfalls in mind to ensure you claim every offer smoothly.
- Forgetting Proper ID: A digital photo of your ID isn't always accepted. Carry your physical active-duty card, dependent ID, Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC), or state driver's license with the veteran endorsement.
- Assuming All Locations Participate: Franchise owners can opt out of corporate Veterans Day promotions. Check local store policies before driving across the island.
- Overlooking Blackout Restrictions: Many dining offers apply strictly to dine-in customers only, excluding alcohol, gratuity, and takeout orders.
