If you're trying to watch News 12 New Jersey through YouTube TV, you won't find it in the channel guide. YouTube TV doesn't carry News 12 networks because of distribution and carriage agreements tied to Optimum (Altice USA), which owns the regional news channel. While cord-cutters often look to major streaming platforms for local news, regional cable-exclusive networks like News 12 require alternative methods to stream without a traditional cable box.
Understanding how to access local New Jersey news without traditional cable saves money and frustration. This guide breaks down why News 12 isn't on YouTube TV, which live TV streaming services actually carry it, and the free or standalone apps you can use to stream local coverage directly to your living room.
Why News 12 New Jersey Is Missing From YouTube TV
Major live TV streaming providers like YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, and DirecTV Stream rely on negotiations with media conglomerates to bundle local broadcast affiliates (like ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX) and regional sports or news networks. News 12 operates as a regional cable news channel primarily built to serve subscribers of Optimum and specific regional internet or cable providers in New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut.
Because Altice USA treats News 12 as a proprietary asset for its broadband and cable bundle, it hasn't licensed the 24/7 linear feed to YouTube TV. When users search the YouTube TV directory for local New Jersey news, they get major broadcast network affiliates or generic national feeds, but not the hyper-local reporting of News 12 New Jersey.
Live TV Streaming Services That Carry News 12
If you refuse to use traditional cable but want alternative live options, choices are limited. Most major virtual multi-channel video programming distributors (vMVPDs) do not include News 12 in their base packages.
- Fubo: Historically, some regional distribution agreements have varied, but Fubo primarily focuses on local broadcast networks and regional sports networks rather than cable-exclusive regional news operations like News 12.
- Sling TV: Sling relies heavily on a la carte packaging and does not carry regional cable news channels like News 12 in its blue or orange line-ups.
- Hulu + Live TV: Similar to YouTube TV, Hulu offers local network affiliates for New York and Philadelphia markets covering New Jersey, but excludes the dedicated News 12 feed.
For fans of live streaming bundles, checking provider channel lineups using your specific home ZIP code on the YouTube TV Official Site ensures you see what local network news is available in your exact town.
Best Ways to Stream News 12 New Jersey Without Cable
Just because News 12 isn't on YouTube TV doesn't mean you're entirely out of luck. Several free and paid streaming platforms host the News 12 24/7 streaming network or offer on-demand clips.
1. Peacock
Peacock features a dedicated 24/7 channel for News 12 New York and regional updates. Since Peacock is a widely supported subscription app available on almost every smart TV and streaming stick, it's one of the easiest ways to access regional headlines if you already subscribe to the service.
2. Free Ad-Supported Streaming TV (FAST) Apps
News 12 distributes its 24/7 news feed across several free platforms. You don't need a paid subscription to watch these; you just need to download the respective app on your device:
- The Roku Channel
- Samsung TV Plus
- Tubi
- Pluto TV
- Xumo Play
3. Dedicated Smart TV and Mobile Apps
If you own an Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, or an Android/iOS mobile device, you can download the standalone News 12 App. While it doesn't plug into your YouTube TV guide, it provides free access to local breaking news, weather forecasts, traffic updates, and segmented video clips from across New Jersey counties. You can check official updates directly through the News 12 New Jersey Portal.
Common Mistakes When Trying to Find Local News
Cord-cutters frequently run into roadblocks when switching from traditional cable to streaming. Avoiding these common errors saves time:
- Assuming all local news is on YouTube TV: While YouTube TV handles major network affiliates brilliantly, it doesn't automatically secure regional cable monopolies. Always verify channel lists using your exact ZIP code before subscribing.
- Confusing New York and New Jersey feeds: Because northern New Jersey falls into the New York media market, make sure you select the correct regional stream so you get local Bergen or Essex county news instead of Manhattan headlines.
- Paying for redundant services: Don't purchase an expensive live TV package solely for regional news if a free FAST app or a low-cost streaming service like Peacock already carries the feed you want.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get News 12 New Jersey with an OTA digital antenna?
No. News 12 is a cable and digital subscription network, not an over-the-air broadcast station (like channels 2, 4, 7, or 11). An antenna will pick up local network affiliates, but it won't pull in News 12.
Is there a standalone subscription for News 12?
Optimum and Altice offer digital access paths, but News 12 is primarily bundled through participating internet and TV providers or viewed via free ad-supported streaming networks rather than a standalone paid streaming app.
Does Hulu + Live TV have News 12?
No, Hulu + Live TV does not carry News 12 New Jersey. It features local broadcast stations covering the tri-state area, but excludes the cable-exclusive News 12 channels.
How can I watch News 12 weather and traffic for free?
You can download the free News 12 mobile app on iOS or Android, or watch the 24/7 live stream on free platforms like Tubi, Roku Channel, or Samsung TV Plus without paying a monthly subscription fee.
