NCIS Season 21 delivers a streamlined ten-episode run on CBS following industry delays, bringing back the core team at the Washington Navy Yard while navigating major behind-the-scenes changes. The season balances high-stakes personal jeopardy for Special Agent Nick Torres with a heartfelt tribute to late franchise legend David McCallum, whose character, Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard, receives a dedicated memorial episode.
The primary keyword target, NCIS season 21 cast, centers on the dynamic ensemble returning to solve complex naval crimes under Supervisory Special Agent Alden Parker. Longtime fans tracking actor updates, guest stars, and character arcs will find a complete breakdown of who anchors the squad and which guest faces shape the shortened broadcast year.
Returning Legends and Core Agents
The core roster remains largely intact, anchoring the Major Case Response Team (MCRT) through emotionally charged investigations. Gary Cole continues to lead the unit as Alden Parker, balancing his quirky hobbies with sharp investigative instincts. Sean Murray returns as Timothy McGee, the MIT graduate who steps up as second-in-command and occasionally flirts with acting director duties.
Wilmer Valderrama portrays Nick Torres, whose character arc explodes right out of the gate in the premiere when he faces arrest for murder. Katrina Law anchors her role as Jessica Knight, navigating tactical field operations alongside her relationship dynamics with medical examiner Jimmy Palmer, played by Brian Dietzen. Diona Reasonover rounds out the laboratory side as forensic specialist Kasie Hines, and Rocky Carroll commands the broader agency framework as Director Leon Vance.
The Tribute to Ducky and Supporting Faces
The season addresses a heavy real-world loss following the September 2023 passing of beloved actor David McCallum. The second episode, titled "The Stories We Leave Behind," serves as a tribute to Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard. The team discovers an unfinished case Ducky was working on, allowing the characters and the writers to honor McCallum's two-decade legacy on the show through flashbacks and emotional closures.
Recurring players also pop up to enrich the seasonal plotlines:
- Joe Spano as Tobias Fornell, bringing seasoned private investigator wisdom and past FBI ties.
- Margo Harshman as Delilah Fielding-McGee, maintaining her presence as McGee's spouse and DoD intelligence asset.
- J. Claude Deering as technical operator Curtis Hubley.
New Faces and Notable Guest Stars
Because Season 21 was shortened due to industry strikes, the writers relied on high-impact guest actors rather than introducing permanent series regulars. Russell Wong joins the arc as Feng Zhao, an NCIS Special Agent in Charge from the far east office who also happens to be Jessica Knight's estranged father. His appearance triggers critical background details on Knight's family history and career trajectory.
The milestone 1,000th overall episode of the broader franchise also brings crossover flavor. While active franchise leads like Daniela Ruah (Kensi Blye from NCIS: Los Angeles) and Vanessa Lachey (Jane Tennant from NCIS: Hawai'i) make special appearances, the episode stitches together deep institutional ties across the television universe. Other notable guest stars appearing across the ten episodes include Tim Russ as a prominent heart surgeon, along with Al Sapienza and Kim Matula.
