Finding out who plays who in a hit procedural can get confusing, especially when character names, recurring guest stars, and ensemble shifts blur together. The CBS procedural drama NCIS: Hawai'i featured a distinct roster of actors bringing the Aloha State field office to life before its cancellation. If you're trying to keep straight which actor portrays which agent, forensic scientist, or commanding officer, here is the definitive cast breakdown.
Knowing the principal and recurring players helps you navigate the team dynamics across all three seasons. Let's break down the main characters, the actors who portray them, and their specific roles within the fictional Pearl Harbor-based investigative unit.
The Main Cast: Meet the NCIS Hawai'i Team
At the center of the series is a tight-knit team of Naval Criminal Investigative Service agents handling high-stakes national security cases against the backdrop of the Hawaiian islands.
Jane Tennant played by Vanessa Lachey
As the Special Agent in Charge of the NCIS Pearl Harbor field office, Jane Tennant is the first female to hold the position. She balances the immense pressure of commanding a federal law enforcement unit with raising two children as a single mother. Vanessa Lachey anchors the show with a performance that mixes stern tactical authority with deep empathy for her squad and the local community.
Kai Holman played by Alex Tarrant
A native Islander who returned home to care for his ailing father, Kai Holman is a seasoned field agent with a background in the Marines. Alex Tarrant portrays Kai's deep connection to Hawaiian culture and his tactical proficiency. His local roots frequently give the team an insider perspective that mainland investigators miss.
Jesse Boone played by Noah Mills
Jesse Boone is Tennant's second-in-command and a former DC homicide detective. Noah Mills plays the gentle giant of the office—a family man who loves outdoor adventure, extreme sports, and cooking, but brings absolute grit and tactical precision when a suspect needs tracking down.
Lucy Tara played by Yasmine Al-Bustami
As a junior field agent, Lucy Tara is eager to prove herself and often tackles surveillance and undercover work. Yasmine Al-Bustami brings a vibrant energy to Lucy, whose professional journey also intersects with her high-profile relationship with FBI Special Agent Kate Whistler.
Kate Whistler played by Tori Anderson
Initially introduced as a Defense Intelligence Agency officer before transitioning to the FBI, Kate Whistler works closely alongside the NCIS team as a liaison. Tori Anderson portrays Kate's evolution from a rigid, by-the-book bureaucrat into an integral, trusted partner and part of the team's inner circle.
Ernie Malik played by Jason Antoon
Ernie Malik is the team's cyber intelligence specialist. Jason Antoon plays the quirky, highly tech-savvy analyst who can hack into satellite feeds or parse digital footprints just as easily as he can quote comic books or reference pop culture lore.
Jesse's Partner and Field Support: Special Agent Jesse Boone and Others
While the core agents handle the heavy lifting, the supporting roster expands across military branches and local law enforcement agencies to ground the procedural realism.
Key Supporting and Recurring Characters
Beyond the core office staff, several recurring characters shape the ongoing storylines, providing interagency friction, legal oversight, or personal connections.
Captain Joe Milius played by Enver Gjokaj
A high-ranking U.S. Navy captain, Joe Milius crosses paths with Tennant during a sensitive national security investigation in the opening season. Enver Gjokaj portrays Milius with sharp diplomatic skill and a mutual professional respect for Tennant that develops into a compelling dynamic.
Commander Chase played by Seana Kofoed
As the chief medical examiner for the region, Commander Chase provides autopsy reports and forensic insights. Seana Kofoed brings a dry wit and steady professionalism to the morgue, handling crime scenes with clinical precision.
Maggie Shaw played by Julie White
