Katy Perry left American Idol to refocus on her recording career, embark on international tours, and release new music after spending seven consecutive seasons on the ABC judging panel. Her departure after Season 22 marked the end of a major era for the reality singing competition, leaving behind a massive seat that ultimately went to country music icon Carrie Underwood.
Unlike many reality TV exits fueled by behind-the-scenes drama or contract disputes, Perry's departure was driven by personal creative ambition. She wanted to step away from the weekly television grind to write, record, and travel on her own terms.
Why Katy Perry Walked Away from the Judges Table
When Perry joined the panel alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan during the show's 2018 network revival, she brought a massive pop-culture presence to the network. Over seven years, she evaluated thousands of hopeful contestants, doled out hugs, shed tears, and became a stabilizing core of the broadcast.
However, balancing a grueling weekly television production schedule with a global music career proved restrictive. During her tenure, she released only one studio album, Smile, in 2020. She realized that staying anchored to a soundstage in Los Angeles for months at a time left little room for her own artistic evolution.
The Jimmy Kimmel Live Announcement
Perry chose to break the news of her exit during a February 2024 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. She explained her motivation plainly:
"I love the show so much, but I want to go and see the world and maybe bring new music."

She noted that she needed to "feel that pulse to my own beat" rather than judging other artists week after week. Her fellow judges, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, found out about her exit around the same time the public did, learning that she had quietly spent hours in recording studios preparing for her next chapter.
The Aftermath: New Music and Global Touring
Perry didn't waste time transitioning back into full-time pop star mode. Following her final American Idol episode in May 2024, she threw herself into studio sessions and promotional cycles.
In September 2024, she released her seventh studio album, 143. She also headlined major international festival slots, including a high-profile performance at Rock in Rio in Brazil, and prepared for expansive global tour dates spanning multiple continents. By stepping away from network television constraints, she cleared her schedule to chase creative projects that required months of continuous travel.
Who Replaced Katy Perry on American Idol?
Filling a vacancy left by a global pop superstar required an equally massive name. After months of online speculation that floated artists like Taylor Swift and Jennifer Lopez, producers found their answer in television history.
In August 2024, ABC announced that Carrie Underwood—who won the fourth season of the competition in 2005—would take over Perry's seat. Underwood joined returning judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie for Season 23, bringing a unique perspective as a former contestant turned global superstar.
