Despite sharing a last name, a position, and connections to the state of Arizona, Jack Plummer is not the son of former NFL quarterback Jake Plummer. In fact, the two signal-callers share no blood relation whatsoever. The persistent rumor that they are a father-son duo is entirely a coincidence of nomenclature, position, and overlapping career paths.
Fans and sports commentators frequently mistake them for relatives, especially given how common it is for football dynasties to pass the torch from generation to generation. However, digging into their actual family backgrounds reveals two completely separate lineages that happened to produce professional quarterbacks.
Unpacking the Namesake Confusion
The confusion between Jack and Jake stems from several uncanny parallel lines in their football journeys. Both men played the quarterback position, both spent significant formative years with ties to Arizona, and both caught the attention of national media while playing for major college programs.
When Jack entered the professional ranks and later spent time with the Carolina Panthers, he was assigned jersey number 16—the exact number Jake wore during his storied career with the Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos. This jersey assignment poured fuel on the rumor fire, leading casual observers to assume it was a deliberate nod to a father-son legacy. In reality, it was just a coincidence of available locker room digits. As highlighted in recent coverage by Reuters, the results are worth noting.
Who Is Jack Plummer's Actual Father?
Jack Plummer was born in Dubuque, Iowa, and raised in Gilbert, Arizona, where he starred at Gilbert High School. His actual father is Bradley Plummer. Unlike his son, Bradley did not play under the bright lights of the NFL.
Jack also has a brother named Will, who also pursued football, keeping athletics firmly rooted in their immediate family tree without any crossover to the former Denver Broncos star. Jack went on to carve out his own collegiate path playing for Purdue, California, and Louisville, before breaking into the professional sphere.
Who Are Jake Plummer's Children?
To put the father-son rumor to rest completely, we can look at Jake Plummer's immediate family. Born in Boise, Idaho, Jake rose to fame as an All-American at Arizona State University before a ten-year NFL career.
Jake and his wife Kollette have children of their own, but none of them are named Jack, and none of them are professional football players. Jake's post-football life has largely centered around family, grassroots advocacy, and competitive team handball rather than coaching a namesake son through the quarterback ranks.
Comparing Their Football Trajectories
While they aren't related, looking at how their careers stack up side by side highlights why their names often get lumped together in sports trivia discussions.
- Jake Plummer was a second-round draft pick in 1997 by the Arizona Cardinals, led the team to memorable moments, and later earned a Pro Bowl selection with the Denver Broncos. He finished third in the 1996 Heisman Trophy voting.
- Jack Plummer took a more circuitous route, playing for multiple college programs before entering the professional ranks and later finding success and individual accolades in alternative professional leagues like the UFL.
Sharing a surname in professional sports always triggers internet sleuthing. Yet, in this case, the shared last name is nothing more than a coincidence.
