Finding Investigation Discovery on Optimum TV shouldn't require digging through endless menus or flipping blindly past news networks. If you're hunting for true crime marathons, you'll find Investigation Discovery (often abbreviated as ID) on Channel 171 across most Optimum service regions, including New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
Getting true crime access on your cable or streaming box depends on your specific subscription tier and equipment setup. Whether you're troubleshooting a missing channel number, trying to stream episodes on the go via the Optimum TV app, or looking for alternative ways to watch your favorite investigative series, this guide cuts straight to the facts.
Optimum TV Channel Number for Investigation Discovery
For standard digital cable boxes and the newer Optimum One interface, Investigation Discovery is reliably broadcast on Channel 171.
- Standard and HD Broadcasts: Optimum delivers ID in high definition on channel 171 for the vast majority of regional lineups.
- Regional Variations: While channel 171 covers most core tri-state service areas, local headends can occasionally shift channel allocations. If channel 171 displays a different network in your specific town, press the Guide button on your remote or check the digital channel map on the official Optimum Channel Lineup portal.
- On-Screen Search: On modern Optimum boxes, tap the voice search button on your remote and simply say "Investigation Discovery" to jump straight to the live feed or on-demand folder.
Which Optimum TV Packages Include Investigation Discovery?
Channel numbers only matter if your subscription tier actually includes the network. Investigation Discovery isn't hidden behind an elite sports tier, but it does require an entry-level digital package or above.
- Core Lineups: ID is typically bundled into standard mid-tier channel packages like Optimum Core TV or Optimum Entertainment TV.
- Basic TV Restrictions: If you subscribe strictly to a local broadcast-only basic tier, specialized cable networks like ID may be excluded. You'll need to check your specific monthly billing statement to confirm whether entertainment cable networks are part of your active lineup.
- Package Upgrades: If your current plan skips channel 171, switching packages can be done directly through your online account portal or by contacting Optimum Support.
Streaming Investigation Discovery Without Traditional Cable
You aren't strictly chained to your living room set-top box to catch true crime investigations. Optimum subscribers can take their channel access on the road using digital authenticated streaming options.
- The Optimum TV App: Download the official app on a smartphone, tablet, or supported streaming device (like Apple TV, Roku, or Amazon Fire TV). Log in with your primary Optimum ID and password to stream live television, including channel 171, anywhere you have an internet connection.
- The ID GO App: You can log into the dedicated Investigation Discovery GO application using your Optimum credentials. This unlocks a massive library of on-demand episodes, current season premieres, and complete true crime series without extra fees.
- On-Demand Library: Press the On Demand button on your Optimum remote, navigate to networks, and select Investigation Discovery. Most popular shows appear here shortly after airing live.
Common Troubleshooting Tips for Missing Channels
If channel 171 isn't working or appears locked, a few common roadblocks are usually to blame. Here's how to fix them quickly:
- Refresh Your Set-Top Box: Unplug your Optimum box from the wall power outlet for thirty seconds, then plug it back in. This forces a complete channel map refresh and clears minor software glitches.
- Check Parental Controls: If certain true crime programs or entire channels seem blocked, check your box settings. PIN-protected parental controls can restrict channels featuring mature themes or true crime content.
- Account Status Check: Delinquent billing or recent package changes can temporarily suspend access to mid-tier cable networks. Verify your account standing in the Optimum customer portal.
