Donald Trump is 80 years old. He was born on June 14, 1946, in Queens, New York. Understanding his age requires looking at both his milestone terms as the 45th and 47th president of the United States and how he fits into the broader history of executive leadership ages.
When he first took office on January 20, 2017, he was 70 years old, making him one of the oldest individuals to assume the presidency at that point in American history. People frequently search for his exact age because his political career spans multiple decades, intersecting with shifting benchmarks for longevity and executive power in Washington.
The Early Years and Birth Date
Born to Fred and Mary Anne Trump in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens, Donald John Trump grew up attending the New York Military Academy before heading to the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania.

By the time he launched his television career with The Apprentice in 2004, he was already in his late fifties.
Age During the 45th Presidency
When people ask about the age of the 45th president, they're pointing to his first term spanning from January 20, 2017, to January 20, 2021.
- Inauguration Day (January 20, 2017): 70 years, 7 months, and 6 days old.
- End of First Term (January 20, 2021): 74 years, 7 months, and 6 days old.
During this initial four-year stretch, his stamina and daily routines became subjects of intense public interest. He was part of a historical shift toward older leadership occupying the Oval Office.
Historical Comparison of Presidential Ages
Age in the American presidency has changed dramatically since the nation's founding. The youngest person to ever assume the office was Theodore Roosevelt, who took over at age 42 following the assassination of William McKinley. John F. Kennedy remains the youngest elected president at age 43.
For comparison, older chief executives have rewritten expectations of political longevity:
- Ronald Reagan: Left office at age 77 in 1989.
- Joe Biden: Assumed office at age 78 in 2021.
- Donald Trump: Began his second non-consecutive term as the 47th president at age 78 in January 2025.
You can read more about executive branch archives and historical data through the Miller Center or official presidential libraries like the Trump Presidential Library. These institutions preserve the administrative records and public schedules that document how age interacts with executive duties.
Common Misconceptions About Presidential Age Limits
Many citizens assume the United States Constitution imposes a maximum age limit for running for president. It doesn't. The constitutional requirements are straightforward:
- A candidate must be a natural-born citizen of the United States.
- They must be at least 35 years old.
- They must have been a resident within the United States for 14 years.
Because there's no ceiling, voters alone decide whether an aging candidate possesses the physical and mental capacity for the job. This has fueled ongoing policy debates about whether Congress should introduce cognitive testing or age caps for federal elected officials.
