This guide breaks down the main cast members, supporting actors, musical guests, and answers common questions about the production.
The Core Television Ensemble
The heart of the movie relies on the established chemistry of the Disney Channel series regular cast. These characters transition from Malibu back to Tennessee, driving the emotional core of the narrative.
- Miley Cyrus as Miley Stewart / Hannah Montana: Miley plays the dual role of an ordinary teenager hiding a double life as a global pop sensation. In the film, her public persona spirals out of control during a shopping dispute with Tyra Banks, forcing her father to ground her pop identity and take her home to Tennessee.
- Billy Ray Cyrus as Robby Ray Stewart: As Miley's real-life and on-screen father, Robby Ray acts as both a protective single parent and her manager. He orchestrates the trip to Crowley Corners to help Miley reconnect with her roots and remember who she is away from the spotlight.
- Emily Osment as Lilly Truscott: Lilly is Miley's fiercely loyal best friend who accidentally exposes the Hannah Montana secret to a tabloid reporter while trying to help Miley attend both a friend's birthday and a major awards show appearance.
- Jason Earles as Jackson Stewart: Jackson is Miley's sarcastic older brother who stays behind in Tennessee to pack up the house before heading off to college, providing much of the film's physical comedy and sibling rivalry.
- Mitchel Musso as Oliver Oken: Oliver is Miley and Lilly's close friend who gets left behind in Malibu for most of the narrative but joins the final musical resolution.
- Moisés Arias as Rico Suave: Rico is the sharp-tongued, mischievous young entrepreneur from the beach community who clashes with Jackson.
New Characters Introduced in the Film
Moving the story to rural Tennessee required a fresh set of supporting characters to challenge Miley and provide new romantic and community dynamics. More journalism by Entertainment Weekly explores comparable perspectives on this issue.
- Lucas Till as Travis Brody: Travis is Miley's childhood friend and primary love interest in the film. He teaches her how to ride horses and helps her appreciate simple country living, eventually discovering her secret identity during the climax.
- Margo Martindale as Grandma Ruby: Ruby is Miley and Jackson's warm, no-nonsense grandmother who keeps Robby Ray grounded and provides a welcoming home in Tennessee.
- Vanessa Williams as Vita: Vita serves as Hannah Montana's ambitious publicist who constantly pushes the pop star toward more media engagements, creating friction with Robby Ray's desire for a balanced family life.
- Peter Gunn as Oswald Granger: Oswald is a tabloid journalist who tracks Hannah Montana to Tennessee, determined to uncover her secret identity for a massive scoop.
- Melora Hardin as Lorelai: Lorelai is a local townsfolk member and potential romantic interest for Robby Ray, adding a layer of parental relationship drama to the plot.
Cameos and Musical Guest Stars
The movie doubles as a concert event, featuring several high-profile musical acts who perform as themselves during key plot sequences.
- Taylor Swift: Appears as herself during an outdoor fundraiser concert, performing her hit song "Crazier" while Miley and Travis dance together.
- Rascal Flatts: The country music group performs at the Crowley Corners town fair, helping the community raise money to save their land from commercial development.
- Tyra Banks: Appears as herself in a cameo at a shoe store in Malibu where Hannah Montana and a rival celebrity fight over the last pair of shoes, sparking the initial media frenzy.
Behind-the-Scenes Production Realities
The production of the movie changed significantly from early network plans. According to historical production notes on IMDb, the film was shot primarily in Columbia and Los Angeles, California, replicating rural Tennessee. Director Peter Chelsom wanted the film to feel authentic to family dynamics rather than just a standard concert movie extension.
A common mistake viewers make is assuming the outdoor concert scenes used digital crowds. The production actually utilized thousands of background extras recruited locally for the massive open-air sequences, giving the musical numbers a genuine arena-scale energy.
