The 15th annual Governors Awards, hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood, delivered a night defined by lifetime achievements, emotional tributes, and star-studded red-carpet arrivals. Held on November 17, 2024, this key milestone on the awards-season calendar honored titans of music, casting, production, and humanitarian work, setting the tone for the wider Oscar race.
Unlike the main Academy Awards ceremony, the Governors Awards focus exclusively on honorary and statuette accolades voted on by the Board of Governors. The evening recognized figures whose behind-the-scenes or career-spanning contributions shaped modern cinema, featuring major honorees such as Quincy Jones, Juliet Taylor, Richard Curtis, Michael G. Wilson, and Barbara Broccoli.
Major Honorees and Recipients
The Academy presented four distinct statuettes during the ceremony, each celebrating a unique pillar of the international film industry.
Honorary Academy Awards
- Quincy Jones: The legendary music producer, composer, and arranger received a posthumous Honorary Oscar, celebrated through a moving musical tribute led by Jennifer Hudson. Jones's vast contributions to film scores and culture left an indelible mark on Hollywood history.
- Juliet Taylor: Recognized for her legendary career as a casting director, Taylor shaped the cinematic landscape by casting iconic films for directors like Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, and Steven Spielberg. Her award highlighted the vital, often overlooked art of casting in actor-driven storytelling.
The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award
Filmmaker and screenwriter Richard Curtis received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, presented by actor Hugh Grant. Known for romantic comedies like Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill, Curtis was honored for his profound philanthropic work, notably co-founding Comic Relief and Red Nose Day, which raised billions of dollars for poverty relief and charitable causes globally.
The Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award
Producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli accepted the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, presented by Daniel Craig. As the long-time stewards of the James Bond franchise under Eon Productions, Wilson and Broccoli were recognized for consistent, high-quality motion picture production that sustained one of cinema's most enduring and commercially successful properties for decades.
Unforgettable Moments and Highlights
Comedian and actor Colman Domingo helmed the evening as master of ceremonies, opening the night with a sharp, energetic monologue that balanced industry humor with deep reverence for the honorees.
Beyond the formal presentations, the room hummed with the energy of top contenders and Hollywood icons mingling ahead of the competitive voting window. Celebrities like Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lopez, Paul Mescal, and Selena Gomez filled the Ray Dolby Ballroom, creating a high-fashion preview of the upcoming awards circuit. Another notable highlight featured intimate onstage speeches that broke away from standard boilerplate thank-yous, offering raw insights into the collaborative realities of filmmaking.
