When the beloved romantic comedy and drama series returned for its complete reboot, fans cared deeply about who brought the iconic characters to life. The 2019 adaptation of Fruits Basket brought a fresh production style, a completely new Japanese voice cast, and the triumphant return of classic English dub voice actors. Among the most complex figures in the series is the manipulative yet charming dog zodiac, Shigure Sohma.
The Japanese voice of Shigure Sohma in the 2019 reboot is Yuichi Nakamura, while the English voice is handled by John Burgmeier, who reprised his iconic role from the 2001 original anime. Understanding how these two distinct vocal performances shape Shigure's layered personality gives us a much clearer picture of why the character remains so memorable. Let's break down the voice actors, their careers, and how they tackle one of the most enigmatic figures in anime history.
Meet Yuichi Nakamura: The Japanese Voice of Shigure
Yuichi Nakamura is one of the most prolific and recognizable voice actors in modern Japanese animation. Known for his smooth, rich vocal register, Nakamura excels at playing characters who project an easygoing, lazy, or mischievous demeanor while hiding intense calculation underneath. Shigure fits this archetype perfectly.
Vocal Approach and Character Nuance
Shigure spends half his time acting like a goofy, irresponsible freelance author who avoids his deadlines and teases Hatori and Ayame. The other half reveals a cunning manipulator who pulls strings behind the scenes to break the curse of the Sohma family. Nakamura handles this tonal whiplash brilliantly. He drops the playful lilt in his voice instantly when Shigure turns serious, giving viewers chills without relying on over-the-top screaming.
Other Notable Roles by Yuichi Nakamura
If Nakamura's voice sounds familiar, that's because he anchors dozens of major anime franchises. Some of his most celebrated characters include:
- Satoru Gojo in Jujutsu Kaisen
- Tetsuro Kuroo in Haikyu!!
- Kylian and various other heroes across gaming and animation
- Gintoki's rival or similar cynical yet reliable archetypes
Meet John Burgmeier: The English Dub Voice of Shigure
For fans watching the English dub, hearing John Burgmeier return as Shigure was a massive nostalgia trip. Burgmeier didn't just voice the character in the 2001 Studio Deen version; he stepped right back into the role for the 2019 TMS Entertainment reboot, maintaining continuity for long-time international fans.
Maintaining Legacy While Maturing the Tone
Voice acting styles changed significantly between 2001 and 2019. The 2001 anime leaned heavily into early-2000s comedic tropes, whereas the 2019 reboot adapted the manga faithfully to its dramatic conclusion. Burgmeier adjusted his performance to match this darker, more emotional shift. His delivery of Shigure's darker monologues in the later seasons showcases a maturity that the older adaptation never quite reached.
Burgmeier Behind the Scenes
Aside from voicing Shigure, Burgmeier has spent decades working with Funimation (now Crunchyroll) as a voice actor, writer, and director. You might recognize his voice as Kurama in Yu Yu Hakusho or Tien Shinhan in the Dragon Ball franchise. His experience shines through in how effortlessly he manages Shigure's comedic timing during chaotic household moments with Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo.
How Shigure Differs From Other Zodiac Members
Shigure's role in the narrative requires a very specific vocal delivery because he is fundamentally different from the younger cursed members. While Yuki and Kyo struggle with direct trauma and teenage angst, Shigure is an adult who knows everything about the curse's mechanics yet keeps his cards close to his chest.
Both Nakamura and Burgmeier capture this age gap and psychological detachment. They make Shigure sound genuinely older and more worldly than the teenagers living under his roof, even when he's lounging in a kimono eating rice crackers. This subtle distinction prevents Shigure from feeling like just another comedic relief character.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did the 2019 Fruits Basket anime replace all the original English voice actors?
No. While Funimation recast several roles due to various industry changes and availability over the 18-year gap, several core cast members returned. Alongside John Burgmeier returning as Shigure, other legacy actors reprised their roles to bridge the gap for fans.
Why does Shigure wear a kimono all the time?
As a historical romance novelist, Shigure adopts a traditional aesthetic that matches his profession and his old-fashioned mindset. Both voice actors use a relaxed, unhurried cadence to reflect this laid-back lifestyle.
Is Shigure the main villain of Fruits Basket?
Shigure is an anti-hero rather than a traditional villain. While he manipulates people and events to achieve his personal goal of destroying the Sohma family bond, his ultimate motivations tie back to his complex relationship with the head of the family, Akito.
How many episodes does Fruits Basket (2019) span?
The complete adaptation runs for 63 episodes across three distinct seasons, covering the entire manga story arc from beginning to end without rushing the plot details. You can explore more about the production history on Crunchyroll.
