When music fans think of Chubby Checker, they picture the energetic pioneer who popularized The Twist and turned dance crazes into global phenomena. Born Ernest Evans in 1941, the legendary singer changed popular culture forever in 1960. Beyond his chart-topping hits and decades of touring, Checker built a lasting family life with his wife, Dutch model and 1962 Miss World Catharina Lodders, whom he married in 1964.
While internet clickbait often distorts the topic with vague references to "Chubby Checker children," the reality is a grounded family featuring four children: Bianca Johanna Evans, Ilka Evans, musician Shan Egan, and former professional basketball player Mistie Bass. Understanding Checker's family requires looking past generic pop-culture myths to examine the actual lives, careers, and paths of his children.
The Marriage to Catharina Lodders and Family Foundations
Chubby Checker met Catharina Lodders in Manila in January 1963, later proposing in December of that same year. He even wrote his song "Loddy Lo" about her. They married on April 12, 1964, in Pennsauken, New Jersey, embarking on a marriage that has spanned over six decades.
Together, Checker and Lodders raised their family away from the most chaotic aspects of 1960s tabloid culture, though they occasionally appeared in family features. Their union produced three children born into the height of Checker's international fame: Bianca Johanna, Ilka, and Shan. Additionally, Checker is the father of Mistie Bass from another relationship. Each child carved out distinct professional paths spanning music, athletics, and private careers.
Bianca Johanna Evans: Keeping a Low Profile
The eldest child of Chubby Checker and Catharina Lodders, Bianca Johanna Evans, was born in a Philadelphia hospital on December 8, 1966. Unlike her father, who spent his entire life in the relentless spotlight of television screens and concert stages, Bianca chose a private life.
Despite growing up with a father who was one of the most recognizable faces in American music, Bianca avoided the entertainment industry. Archival family photographs from publications and photo agencies like Getty Images occasionally capture her alongside her parents and siblings during family gatherings in Philadelphia, but she maintains a quiet, non-public lifestyle today.
Shan Egan: Following the Musical Footsteps
While Bianca chose privacy, Shan Egan (born Shan Evans) embraced her father's artistic inclinations. Based in the Philadelphia area, Shan pursued a career as a professional musician.
She serves as the lead singer of Funk Church, a regional band known for energetic live performances. Growing up in a household with a rock and roll pioneer naturally exposed her to rhythm, vocal training, and stage presence. Rather than relying solely on her father's historic name, Shan built her own reputation in the local music circuit, bringing a modern soulful rock sound to Pennsylvania stages.
Mistie Bass: Athletic Success on the Hardwood
Perhaps the most publicly recognizable of Chubby Checker's children in the mainstream sports world is Mistie Bass (born Mistie Mims). A talented basketball player, Mistie built an impressive athletic career that reached the highest levels of women's professional sports.
Mistie played college basketball for Duke University, where she earned significant accolades before being drafted into the WNBA. During her professional career, she played for several teams, including the Phoenix Mercury, Chicago Sky, and Connecticut Sun, winning WNBA championships and establishing herself as a powerhouse forward. Her athletic achievements brought a completely different kind of fame to the family name, proving that performance talent extended beyond musical stages.
Ilka Evans: Privacy and Family Continuity
The second daughter born to Checker and Lodders, Ilka Evans, shares a similar trajectory to her sister Bianca. Opting out of the public eye, Ilka has largely avoided media scrutiny and career spotlights.
Family historical records and rare public appearances show her maintaining close ties to her parents and siblings in Pennsylvania. Her choice to live away from celebrity culture highlights how Checker and his wife prioritized normalcy for children growing up amid historic fame.
