Bronny James is 22 years old, born on October 6, 2004. He entered the professional basketball spotlight not only as a high-profile recruit from Sierra Canyon School and the University of Southern California, but also as the eldest son of NBA superstar LeBron James. Standing at six feet two inches, he plays as a guard and made history by joining his father on the Los Angeles Lakers as the first active father-son duo in league history.
Understanding his trajectory requires looking past the celebrity headlines. From his early days playing AAU circuit games in middle school to being selected 55th overall in the 2004-aligned 2024 NBA Draft, Bronny's journey has faced intense media scrutiny. This profile details his age, athletic background, physical profile, and the realities of transitioning from college prospect to professional guard.
Early Life and High School Development
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Bronny—full name LeBron Raymone James Jr.—grew up immersed in elite basketball culture. By the time he reached high school, his games drew packed arenas and national television broadcasts. He attended Sierra Canyon School in Chatsworth, California, where he developed into a consensus four-star prospect.
During his high school tenure, he showcased solid defensive instincts, unselfish passing, and an improving perimeter shot. He earned a selection to the prestigious McDonald's All-American Game in his senior year, confirming his status among the top tier of high school basketball players nationwide. Despite constant pressure from fans and media comparing him to his father, Bronny maintained a reputation as a willing teammate who prioritized team defensive stops over isolation scoring.
College Career at USC and Health Recovery
Bronny committed to the USC Trojans in May 2023, setting the stage for a major step forward in his competitive development. However, his freshman campaign hit a severe hurdle in July 2023 when he suffered a cardiac arrest during an off-season workout due to a congenital heart defect.
Following a successful procedure and months of rehabilitation, he received medical clearance to return to the court. He made his debut for USC in December 2023, playing primarily in a reserve role. While his freshman statistics were modest—averaging roughly 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game across 25 appearances—his return to full health and competitive form remained the primary victory of that season.
Transition to the NBA and the Lakers
Following his freshman season at USC, Bronny declared for the 2024 NBA Draft while maintaining his college eligibility. After participating in the NBA Draft Combine, where his athletic testing numbers impressed scouts, the Los Angeles Lakers selected him in the second round with the 55th overall pick.
This move created an unprecedented milestone in professional sports: LeBron and Bronny sharing an NBA court as teammates. To refine his skill set and gain consistent playing time, Bronny split time between the active Lakers roster and their G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers. In the developmental league, he logged valuable minutes handling the ball, running pick-and-rolls, and adjusting to the speed of professional play.
Physical Profile and Playing Style
Scouts evaluate Bronny as a combo guard whose primary traits center on perimeter defense, transition play, and secondary ball-handling.
- Height and Weight: Listed at 6 feet 2 inches and roughly 210 pounds, giving him a compact, sturdy frame to absorb contact on drives and contest opposing guards.
- Defense: Regarded as his strongest asset. He fights through screens, applies ball pressure, and rotates well on help-side defense.
- Shooting: Continues to refine his catch-and-shoot three-point consistency to stretch defenses cleanly.
- Playmaking: Prefers making the extra pass and keeping the offense moving rather than dominating possession.
