The year 2022 transformed Telugu cinema into a global powerhouse. Tollywood moved past formulaic potboilers to deliver massive international blockbusters, deeply personal biographies, and boundary-pushing romantic dramas. While films like RRR shattered worldwide box office records and captured western imagination, mid-budget projects and unexpected thrillers redefined contemporary storytelling.
If you missed out on the defining moments of Tollywood's golden run that year, or want to understand what made the industry click, this breakdown examines the top-tier releases, critical darlings, and box-office champions that defined 2022.
The Global Phenomenon: RRR
S.S. Rajamouli's period action drama RRR wasn't just a movie; it was a cultural movement. Set in the 1920s, the film fictionalizes a meeting between two real-life Indian revolutionaries, Alluri Srama Raju and Komaram Bheem, played with ferocious intensity by Ram Charan and N.T. Rama Rao Jr.
What elevated RRR above standard commercial fare was Rajamouli's unmatched command over scale and emotion. Every set piece, from a prison break to a wild animal attack unleashed on a British mansion, felt operatic. Backed by M.M. Keeravani's thunderous score and the global phenomenon of the track "Naatu Naatu," the film crossed language barriers effortlessly, eventually paving a historic path to the Academy Awards.
Emotional Anchors: Major and Sita Ramam
While action spectacles dominated the marquee, 2022 belonged to emotionally resonant narratives that prioritized soul over sheer muscle.
Major
Directed by Sashi Kiran Tikka and starring Adivi Sesh, Major chronicled the life of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, the heroic officer who lost his life saving hostages during the 2008 Mumbai attacks. Avoiding the trap of loud, jingoistic posturing, the film focused on the intimate details of Sandeep's growth from an idealistic teenager to a selfless soldier. Sesh delivered a career-best performance, anchoring a tribute that left audiences across India with a lump in their throats.
Sita Ramam
Hanu Raghavapudi's period romance Sita Ramam proved that old-school love stories still resonate. Starring Dulquer Salmaan as an orphan soldier writing letters to a mysterious woman named Sita (Mrunal Thakur), the film unfolded across a dual timeline in the 1960s and 1980s. With breathtaking cinematography, a timeless soundtrack by Vishal Chandrashekhar, and strong thematic undercurrents about humanity surpassing borders, it stood out as the romantic benchmark of the year.
Smart Comedies and Genre Benders
Tollywood also experimented successfully with writing, stepping away from standard hero-centric tropes.
- Ante Sundaraniki: Vivek Athreya crafted a romantic comedy that doubled as a sharp social commentary. Starring Nani and Nazriya Nazim, the film followed an interfaith couple juggling orthodox families through an increasingly chaotic web of lies. Its non-linear screenplay and sensitive handling of progressive ideas made it a critical darling.
- Karthikeya 2: Chandoo Mondeti blended mythology and mystery in this small-budget adventure thriller. Nikhil Siddhartha played an adrenaline junkie tracking ancient artifacts linked to Lord Krishna, proving that tight plotting and authentic cultural roots could turn a modest project into a pan-India box-office blockbuster.
- DJ Tillu: Siddhu Jonnalagadda redefined youthful Hyderabadi slang and attitude. This unfiltered crime comedy worked because the protagonist was unapologetically flawed, relying on sharp, localized wit rather than formulaic heroism.
Common Misconceptions About 2022 Tollywood
Many international viewers assume 2022 was solely about high-octane action films due to the massive footprints left by RRR and Pushpa (which carried momentum from late 2021). However, the year's true strength lay in its variety. Low-to-mid-budget conceptual films like Masooda (horror) and Mishan Impossible (crime comedy) found dedicated audiences by trusting viewer intelligence rather than relying strictly on star power.
