The Complete Career Timeline
His football journey is defined by unexpected twists, historic milestones, and professional reinvention.
High School and College Walk-On Years
At Lake Travis High School, Mayfield led his team to a 25-2 record as a starter and won a Class 4A state title. Despite these accolades, major programs overlooked him due to his size. He received few scholarship offers and chose to enroll at Texas Tech University as a walk-on in 2013.
- Texas Tech (2013): Won the starting job out of camp as a true freshman walk-on—the first in FBS history to start a season opener under center for a BCS program. He threw for 2,315 yards and 12 touchdowns before suffering a knee injury and transferring.
- Oklahoma Sooners (2014–2017): Sat out the 2014 season due to NCAA transfer rules. From 2015 onward, he dominated the Big 12. He won the Heisman Trophy in 2017, becoming the first player in history to win the award after starting his career as a walk-on.
The NFL Draft and Cleveland Browns Era
The Cleveland Browns selected Mayfield with the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
- Rookie Success (2018): Stepped in during Week 3 against the New York Jets to spark a comeback win, snapping the franchise's notorious 19-game winless streak. He threw 27 touchdown passes, setting a rookie record at the time.
- Playoff Breakthrough (2020): Guided the Browns to their first postseason appearance since 2002, securing a wild-card round victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- The Exit (2021–2022): Played through a severe shoulder injury in 2021, leading to offensive struggles. The Browns traded him to the Carolina Panthers in July 2022.
Journeyman Resilience and Tampa Bay Revival
After a brief stint in Carolina and a late-season rescue mission with the Los Angeles Rams in late 2022—where he led a game-winning drive just days after signing—Mayfield found his permanent home.
Signing a prove-it deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in March 2023, he revitalized his career. He threw for over 4,000 yards, won consecutive NFC South division titles, earned Pro Bowl nods, and cemented his status as one of the league's toughest competitors.
Reality Behind His Ups and Downs
Media narratives often mischaracterize Mayfield's fiery demeanor. Nicknamed "Moxie" for his brash confidence, his emotional leadership style polarizes fans. However, statistical reality demonstrates that his performance efficiency scales with stability.
When placed in a system that trusts his arm talent and quick release, he ranks among the league's most effective third-down passers. His career postseason passer rating remains exceptionally high, proving he thrives under postseason lights despite external doubts.
