Ashby Gentry has quickly established himself as a recognizable face in modern teen drama and streaming television. Best known for his breakout role as Alex Walter in the Netflix hit My Life with the Walter Boys, Gentry transitioned from stage performances and short films to international television screens. Understanding his career trajectory involves looking closely at his early training, his breakthrough television credits, and how he navigates a growing filmography.
Before landing leading roles on major streaming platforms, Gentry built a foundation in classical theater and independent shorts. His journey from regional productions to global recognition highlights the blend of formal arts education and persistence required in contemporary Hollywood.
Early Life and Acting Foundations
Born in Phoenix, Arizona, Gentry developed an early interest in performance arts through local theater and school productions. After completing high school, he pursued formal training at the Boston University College of Fine Arts, graduating in 2021 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Performance.
This academic background grounded his transition to professional sets. During his university years and immediately following graduation, he took on small independent projects, including the 2018 short film Speechless and appearances in music videos. These early steps allowed him to hone on-camera techniques before auditioning for network television.
Breakthrough Role in My Life with the Walter Boys
Gentry's career accelerated when he secured the role of Alex Walter in the Netflix adaptation of Novak Novakovic's popular Wattpad novel, My Life with the Walter Boys. Released in late 2023, the series instantly captured a massive global audience, thrusting its young cast into the spotlight.
Playing Alex Walter—an intellectual, sensitive bookworm caught in a complex emotional triangle—allowed Gentry to showcase a nuanced emotional range. The character's introspective nature resonated deeply with viewers, driving substantial engagement across social media platforms and cementing Gentry as a prominent fixture in contemporary teen television.
Expanding Filmography and Film Projects
While streaming series define his current public profile, Gentry continues to diversify his resume with independent film work.
- Are You Afraid of the Dark? (2022): Gentry made an early splash on television by guest-starring as Porter in Nickelodeon's horror-anthology revival.
- Mooch (2025): Transitioning to feature films, Gentry starred in this independent comedy-drama directed by Jeff Ryan, acting alongside established screen actors like Louis Cancelmi.
- Upcoming Feature Work: He joined the cast of independent and genre projects, such as The American Winner, continuing to build range outside of serialized teen romance.
Navigating the Industry: Training vs. Overnight Success
A common misconception about young streaming stars is that they appear overnight without professional preparation. In Gentry's case, years of dedicated theatrical study at Boston University directly informed his ability to anchor a multi-season television show.
- The Audition Process: Securing a primary role on a high-profile platform like Netflix requires rigorous callback processes and chemistry reads, which Gentry navigated successfully after years of minor auditions.
- Balancing Tone: Moving between serialized drama and independent film requires stylistic adjustments. Theater training often provides the vocal and emotional control necessary to maintain character consistency across extended shooting schedules.
