When psychic medium Amy Allan announced her departure from the Travel Channel hit series The Dead Files, it sent shockwaves through the paranormal television community. After anchoring the show alongside retired NYPD homicide detective Steve DiSchiavi for over a decade and more than 200 investigations, Allan stepped down mid-way through Season 15. Her final appearance aired on June 29, 2023, leaving fans searching for answers regarding why she left, how the production handled the transition, and what came next for the series.
Allan's exit stemmed primarily from the heavy mental, emotional, and physical toll of conducting intense paranormal investigations over a long period. Having spent years absorbing heavy residual energies and navigating hostile environments, she shared with her community that the work had grown profoundly draining. While rumors and online forums frequently floated alternative narratives, official announcements and statements from the production centered on her need to step away for her health and well-being.
The Timeline of the Exit
The announcement of Allan's departure arrived abruptly ahead of Season 15. In April 2023, the Travel Channel released details about the upcoming season, confirming that Allan would exit the show following the fifth episode.
The timeline unfolded through several key milestones:
- Early 2023: Production for Season 15 moved forward under tight schedules, during which Allan experienced physical health challenges that required medical attention and recovery time.
- April 2023: The network publicly announced that Season 15 would feature Allan for only a handful of episodes before introducing a new medium.
- June 5, 2023: Allan addressed her supporters directly via social media, describing the period as unusually weird, emotional, and draining.
- June 29, 2023: Allan's final episode of The Dead Files aired, marking the end of her foundational run on the program.
- July 2023 onward: Co-host Steve DiSchiavi welcomed replacement psychic medium Cindy Kaza to finish out the season and carry the show forward.
Why Physical Mediumship Took a Toll
To understand why Allan walked away, it helps to look at how her process differed from standard ghost-hunting formats. While investigators like DiSchiavi relied on historical records, witness interviews, and forensic techniques, Allan operated as a physical medium. She walked properties blind to the history, allowing herself to experience the physical pain, emotional trauma, and residual impressions of deceased entities.
Doing this week after week for twelve years created an immense accumulation of stress. Viewers often noticed how physically and emotionally exhausted she appeared during intense walkthroughs. Handling aggressive or tragic residual hauntings required rigorous energetic boundaries, and over time, the constant exposure wore down her personal reserves.
The Transition to Cindy Kaza
Replacing a founding host on a long-running reality series is never easy. When Allan departed, the network brought in Cindy Kaza, an experienced medium known for her work on other paranormal programs.
DiSchiavi addressed the transition on air, acknowledging that adapting to a new investigative partner felt unusual after working exclusively with Allan since 2011. Kaza brought a different energy and interpretive style to the investigations. Rather than attempting to mimic Allan's specific methods, Kaza relied on her own intuitive strengths, which gave the later episodes of The Dead Files a fresh dynamic while maintaining the core investigative structure viewers expected.
What Came Next for The Dead Files and Amy Allan
Following the transition, The Dead Files continued its broadcast run on cable and streaming platforms, adapting its format to fit Kaza's partnership with DiSchiavi. The show proved that its dual-perspective formula—combining historical detective work with psychic impressions—could survive a major cast change.
As for Allan, she stepped back entirely from regular television appearances to focus on her personal life, physical recovery, and energetic reset. Stepping away from the public eye allowed her to distance herself from the relentless travel and high-stress environments that characterized her years on television.
