Academy Sports Hours: Regular Store Schedules And Holidays

Planning a trip to buy camping gear, team sports equipment, or footwear requires knowing when doors open. Most Academy Sports and Outdoors locations operate on a standard weekly schedule, though seasonal shifts and holidays change those hours significantly.

Standard operating hours across the majority of locations run from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM Monday through Saturday, and 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM on Sunday. While these baseline numbers apply to most stores, regional variations exist based on local municipal laws, mall locations, and high-traffic shopping seasons. Checking details ahead of time saves wasted gas and missed shopping trips.

Standard Weekly Store Hours

Knowing the daily breakdown helps you plan whether you're grabbing ammunition before a weekend hunt or picking up a baseball glove after work.

• Monday through Saturday: 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM
• Sunday: 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM

Sundays feature a slightly shorter window, opening an hour later and closing an hour earlier than weekdays. Most locations keep these hours consistent throughout the year, except during major winter holidays and special promotional events.

Major Holiday Schedule

Holiday hours at sporting goods retailers often catch shoppers off guard. Academy keeps its doors shut on only three specific days each year, while running normal or modified hours on nearly every other holiday.

Holidays When Stores Are Closed

Total closures happen strictly three times a year. If you need emergency tailgating supplies on these dates, you'll need to look elsewhere:

• Easter Sunday
• Thanksgiving Day
• Christmas Day

Holidays with Normal or Extended Hours

Most federal and seasonal holidays see regular schedules or adjusted hours designed to capture holiday shoppers.

• New Year's Day: Typically open with reduced Sunday-style hours, usually 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM.
• Memorial Day: Normal hours (8:00 AM to 10:00 PM).
• Independence Day (July 4th): Normal hours, serving heavy traffic for outdoor and grill gear.
• Labor Day: Normal hours (8:00 AM to 10:00 PM).
• Black Friday: Extended early hours, commonly opening at 5:00 AM and closing late at 11:00 PM.
• Christmas Eve: Shortened hours, usually 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
• New Year's Eve: Shortened hours, usually 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

How to Find Your Local Store Hours

Because physical store layouts and regional management occasionally dictate minor time adjustments, verifying your specific branch is always wise.

1. Head to the official Academy Sports + Outdoors website.
2. Click on the store locator icon, typically found at the top right of the navigation bar.
3. Enter your city, state, or ZIP code to bring up nearby branches.
4. Review the specific daily breakdown listed for that exact address, as phone numbers and local manager notes are posted directly on those store pages.

You can also call the local store directly before driving out, especially if you are tracking down high-demand inventory like fishing licenses or firearm background checks that require specific department staffing.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Shoppers frequently run into avoidable roadblocks when timing their visits to sporting goods stores. Keep these pitfalls in mind:

• Assuming all holidays mean shorter hours. Holidays like Memorial Day, Labor Day, and July 4th operate on normal 8 AM to 10 PM schedules. Showing up early expecting holiday hours can leave you waiting in the parking lot.
• Forgetting counter service cutoffs. Even if the front doors are open until 10 PM, specialized counters like hunting and fishing license issuance or firearm sales often close earlier in the evening due to state regulations or limited staff availability.
• Overlooking Sunday hour shifts. Walking up to the doors at 8 AM on a Sunday results in locked doors, since Sunday openings start at 9 AM.
