Finding the right gear for your next outdoor excursion or team sport shouldn't require driving across half the state. If you live in mid-Missouri, the Academy Sports + Outdoors location on Trimble Road serves as the primary regional hub for athletic equipment, footwear, and outdoor apparel. Whether you're prepping for a weekend camping trip near the MKT Trail, gearing up for local youth soccer leagues, or upgrading your tailgating setup for a University of Missouri game, knowing what to expect before you walk through the doors saves time and money.
Operating with expansive floor space and a massive inventory, the Columbia store balances everyday sporting goods with specialized gear for fishing, hunting, and team sports. This guide breaks down store logistics, department highlights, specialized in-store services, and practical tips to help you make the most of your visit.

Department Breakdown
You'll find that the store is divided into distinct zones, each catering to specific recreational interests.
Footwear and Athletic Apparel
The footwear section features walls of running shoes, cross-trainers, cleats, and work boots. Major brands like Nike, Adidas, Under Armour, Brooks, and Crocs dominate the shelves. Adjacent apparel aisles stock moisture-wicking shirts, compression gear, and seasonal outerwear, ensuring you stay comfortable during humid Missouri summers and freezing winter mornings.
Team Sports and Fitness
Local leagues rely heavily on this location for baseball, softball, soccer, basketball, and football equipment. You can pick up bats, balls, protective pads, and uniform essentials. The back fitness zone houses weights, resistance bands, yoga mats, and larger cardio machines for home gym builders.
Outdoor Recreation, Camping, and Tailgating
Missouri offers incredible state parks and water trails. The camping department stocks tents, sleeping bags, coolers from brands like YETI, portable stoves, and hydration packs. Because Columbia is a massive college sports town, the tailgating section expands seasonally with canopy tents, portable grills, folding chairs, and team-logo gear.
Fishing and Hunting
Anglers and hunters find dedicated counters here. The selection includes rods, reels, tackle, archery equipment, and camouflage clothing.
Specialized In-Store Services
Beyond standard retail shopping, the Columbia location offers several hands-on services designed to get your gear ready for action:
- License Sales: You can purchase your Missouri state fishing and hunting licenses directly inside the store before heading out to local rivers or conservation areas.
- Reel Line Spooling: If you buy a new fishing reel or bring in an old one, staff can spool fresh fishing line onto your setup correctly.
- Boresighting and Scope Mounting: Hunters purchasing rifles and optics can utilize professional mounting and boresighting services to ensure accuracy before hitting the field.
- Propane Exchange: Swap out empty propane tanks for full ones to keep your backyard grill or camp stove running.
- Curbside Pickup: If you prefer not to browse the aisles, you can order online through the Academy Sports + Outdoors Store Locator and pick up your items within an hour without leaving your vehicle.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Navigating a massive big-box sporting goods store can occasionally lead to friction if you don't plan ahead. Keep these pitfalls in mind:
- Skipping stock checks for seasonal gear: During peak youth sports sign-up months (early spring and late summer), specific cleat sizes and bat weights sell out fast. Check online inventory before driving over.
- Ignoring license requirements: If you plan to buy hunting or fishing gear, remember that state regulations require proper identification and background checks for specific purchases. Bring valid ID.
- Overlooking store pickup windows: If you utilize the one-hour curbside pickup feature, wait for the official confirmation email stating your order is staged before driving to the Trimble Road location.
